A brutalist build, reimagined
Whitepaper was appointed to transform The Conran Building in Shad Thames, SE1, into a design-led CAT A+ workspace that celebrates its architectural legacy while delivering a modern, energised environment for occupiers. Rather than concealing its brutalist character, the design embraces the building’s raw materiality and structural honesty, using it as a foundation for a workspace rich in personality and narrative.
The concept takes inspiration from Bauhaus principles, introducing a confident colour palette that complements the concrete and steel elements of the building. Furniture was carefully curated to reflect the era, combining clean lines, durable materials, and functional elegance. Bold artwork and styling punctuate the space, adding vibrancy, context, and playful character without overwhelming the architectural integrity. Spatial planning prioritises openness and flexibility, with work areas, meeting rooms, and breakout zones designed to maximise natural light and circulation. Layered textures, considered material choices, and striking colour accents create depth and interest, ensuring the workspace feels both cohesive and engaging. The outcome is a CAT A+ environment that pays homage to The Conran Building’s brutalist heritage while injecting a modern, playful, and highly functional identity. Occupiers benefit from a plug and play workspace that is at once inspiring, contextually grounded, and ready to support a dynamic and creative workforce.
