Quiet luxury in the heart of Mayfair.
Whitepaper was appointed by General People to transform Walworth Town Hall into a dynamic new serviced workspace and community hub, reinventing the Grade II–listed landmark more than a decade after it was severely damaged by fire. Following the 2013 fire, the building was placed on the Heritage at Risk register and remained closed to the public for many years. This project marks a pivotal moment in the building’s history, breathing new life into a much-loved civic asset and restoring it as an active, inclusive destination for the local community.
Located at 151 Walworth Road, the town hall has long been a cornerstone of the area’s identity. The design approach sought to respect and celebrate the building’s architectural heritage while reimagining its future use. Original features and grand civic proportions provide a powerful backdrop for a contemporary workspace concept, allowing the building’s historic character to coexist with a new, forward-looking purpose.
Whitepaper were brought on board to curate a highly detailed, characterful, and playful interior, delivering a CAT B fit-out that extended beyond architecture into extensive furniture, styling, and spatial dressing. The aim was to inject warmth, charm, and moments of surprise throughout the building, creating spaces that feel animated, welcoming, and human. Carefully selected furniture, colour, and texture bring energy to the historic shell, ensuring the interiors feel approachable rather than institutional, and inspiring rather than reverential.
The completed building introduces a flexible, fully serviced workspace concept by General People, designed to support creative, small, and local businesses. A diverse range of work settings — from co-working areas and private offices to shared amenities and informal breakout spaces — provides users with the tools to grow, collaborate, and thrive. At its heart, the town hall now functions as a concourse for the next generation of innovators, fostering connection between tenants, visitors, and neighbours alike.
The result is a true community asset: a revitalised landmark that delivers social and economic value while preserving its cultural significance. Walworth Town Hall has been re-established not just as a place to work, but as a vibrant civic hub — one that inspires its users, supports local enterprise, and reconnects the building with the community it was always meant to serve.
